Navigating the Holidays as a Fitness-Minded Individual

The holidays are officially here, and let’s face it: staying on track with your fitness and nutrition goals can feel next to impossible. I get it. As a coach with a decade of experience, even I find it challenging to stay consistent during this season. It feels like everything piles up—family gatherings, parties, travel, and endless temptations.

Over the years, I’ve picked up some strategies that not only help me stay on track but also keep me in a better mindset about my health. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the holidays while maintaining balance and enjoying the season.

1. Be Okay with Not Being Perfect

Time with family and friends is more important than a workout. I know, coming from a gym owner, that might sound strange, but it’s true. The gym will always be there—family won’t.

You’re probably going to miss a few workouts. You’re going to eat some holiday treats. And guess what? That’s okay. The key is to give yourself permission to enjoy this time guilt-free. When the holidays are over, simply get back to your routine. Progress isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency over time.

2. Control the Controllable

If you’re working toward a specific goal, like fat loss, Thanksgiving can feel like a minefield. Instead of aiming for perfection (which is unrealistic), focus on what you can control:

  • Prioritize protein: Start your meal with turkey or other high-protein options.

  • Plan ahead: Drink a protein shake before heading to the party to curb excessive snacking.

  • Set yourself up for success: Go into the day with the mindset of moderation.

The goal isn’t to deprive yourself; it’s to find balance. Enjoy the holiday, but remember that improving your overall fitness is about learning how to adapt rather than striving for flawlessness.

3. Get Back on Track

Thanksgiving Day itself isn’t what derails most people—it’s the days that follow. The leftovers, the lack of routine, and the lingering holiday mindset can stretch a one-day celebration into a weeklong slump.

The key is to enjoy yourself on the holiday, but then practice self-control by returning to your regular habits as soon as possible. Building a healthy relationship with nutrition and exercise starts with this simple practice: enjoy, reset, repeat.

4. What to Eat on Thanksgiving Day

Let’s get real—you should enjoy Thanksgiving guilt-free. That doesn’t mean piling your plate sky-high three times over. Instead, try this:

  • Fill one plate with the foods you truly love.

  • Enjoy your meal slowly, and let it settle before deciding if you need more.

A healthy relationship with food doesn’t come from avoiding your favorite dishes but from enjoying them in moderation. Allow yourself to savor the day while practicing self-control—it’s a win-win for your body and mind.

The holidays are meant to be a time of joy, connection, and celebration. With a little mindfulness, you can navigate them without losing sight of your fitness goals. Remember, progress is about what you do most of the time, not what happens on a few special days.
