Training During Pregnancy: Why It Matters

Less than two weeks ago, on April 6th, my wife Mara gave birth to our beautiful twins, Oliver and Emerson. She delivered via C-section, which—honestly—we were a bit anxious about.

Many of our friends had warned us that recovery could be slow, painful, and leave moms sidelined for weeks.

Thankfully, that wasn’t our experience.

Mara was released from the hospital within 48 hours and was able to jump right into twin mom life without skipping much of a beat. We truly believe that her quick recovery had a lot to do with the work she put in before and especially during her pregnancy—under the guidance of Integra Fitness coach Brianna.

The Power of Strength Training During Pregnancy

Research—and now, our personal experience—shows that training during pregnancy can lead to better outcomes during birth and postpartum. With the right coaching and modifications, strength training is not only safe for most women, but also incredibly beneficial.

Of course, there are important factors to keep in mind. Some of the more obvious adjustments include avoiding exercises that involve lying on the back for extended periods or any time spent lying on the stomach. But there are also less obvious considerations—like changes in stability due to hormonal shifts and the redistribution of weight as the belly grows.

That’s were working with a knowledgeable coach comes in. Brianna tailored Mara’s workouts to support her changing body while still keeping her strong, mobile, and confident through all three trimesters.

Benefits of Training During Pregnancy

When done with proper guidance and with OB/GYN approval, strength training during pregnancy can offer countless benefits:

  • Improved posture

  • Increased strength for postpartum daily tasks (think: lifting car seats and carrying babies!)

  • Enhanced stamina during labor

  • Better management of healthy weight gain

  • Lower risk of gestational diabetes

  • Reduced risk of preeclampsia

  • Smoother labor and delivery

  • Faster postpartum recovery

  • Improved circulation and reduced swelling

With benefits like these, it’s easy to see why more women are choosing to stay active through pregnancy.
