My Turning Point with Mobility
If you know me, you know how seriously I take mobility training. Most mornings, you’ll find me at the gym 30 minutes before my first clients arrive, going through my daily mobility routine.
But it wasn’t always this way.
Growing up, I was extremely inflexible. I rarely stretched or warmed up. And like many people, I thought I could get away with it — until I injured my back.
That injury was a wake-up call.
Around the same time, I attended a Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) certification course, which completely shifted my perspective. Mobility training quickly went from something I ignored… to something I made a focal point — for both myself and my clients.
Today, I want to share why I take mobility training so seriously — and why you should, too.
1. Mobility Training Is Strength Training — For Your Joints
Mobility isn’t just about stretching deeper. It’s active, controlled, and often loaded movement through your usable range of motion.
According to Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) principles:
Mobility = Flexibility + Strength
Training mobility improves joint function, control, and resiliency
It requires progressive overload, consistency, and intent — just like strength training
Research by Behm & Chaouachi (2011) even shows that dynamic, mobility-focused warmups can improve strength and power performance. In short: mobility work helps you perform better in everything you do.
2. Mobility Supports Longevity
Joint health is long-term health.
As we age, we naturally lose mobility — unless we actively train to maintain it. Mobility training can help:
Prevent joint stiffness and injuries
Maintain independence and confidence
Keep you moving freely throughout your life
It's an investment in your future self.
3. It’s About More Than Just Flexibility
Flexibility is passive. Mobility is active.
True mobility means you can not only reach a position — you can control it.That ability is crucial for strength training, sports, and everyday activities.
Think of it this way:
Flexibility = Being able to touch your toes
Mobility = Being able to touch your toes while keeping control, stability, and strength
4. Mobility Helps You Train (and Live) Better
Good mobility unlocks better movement in — and outside — the gym.
In the gym:
Deeper, safer squats
Stronger, more stable overhead presses
Less joint pain and stiffness
In everyday life:
Getting off the floor easily
Playing with your kids without worrying about your back
Fewer aches after long hours at a desk
Mobility helps you move better and more confidently in everything you do.
5. Consistency Is Key
Just like strength training, mobility work only works if you stick with it.
The good news? You don't need to spend an hour a day. A few focused minutes, a few times a week, adds up fast.
Easy ways to start:
Add mobility exercises to your warmups
Do light mobility work on off-days or after long periods of sitting
Focus on your personal trouble spots (for most people: ankles, hips, thoracic spine, shoulders)
Quick 5-Minute Full-Body Mobility Routine
Here’s a quick, equipment-free routine you can start today:
Cat-Cow (spinal movement)
Adductor Rock backs with Thoracic Spine Rotation (hips and spine)
90/90 Hip Switches (hip mobility)
Scap Floor Slides (shoulder mobility)
Wall Ankle Mobility (ankles and calves)
Just a few minutes a day can make a world of difference.
Recap: Mobility Training Is for Everyone
Mobility training isn’t just for athletes or people recovering from injuries. It’s a foundational part of living an active, pain-free life.
Mobility training helps you:
